Vocab: Local Soil Conditions- when soil is surrounding a house, it's not as stable as houses with rock around it
Liquefaction- when earthquakes cause soil to turn into mud
Aftershock- an earthquake that occurs after a larger earthquake in the same area
Tsunami- earthquakes that are caused on the ocean floor create waves

How Earthquakes Cause Damage

  • can cause a lot of damage; most damage near the epicenter

  • more dangerous to live on soil then on solid ground

  • occurs when earthquakes happen, turns soil into liquid mud

Construction Methods

  • better to build buildings more durable
    • base-isolated buildings help battle when earthquakes occur

Protecting Yourself

  • should drop and hold yourself
    • try hiding under a table or something sturdy that won't break
